During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (14 - 17 February 2011) the GSM Association handed out the Gobal Mobile Awards, the Oscars for the mobile world. The Globile Mobile Awards offer organisations across the mobile world to showcase their latest and best mobile products, service and initiatives to the world.

The three main awards to win were the award for best mobile device, best device manufacturer and best mobile application.

And the winners are...

No one was surprised that Apple carried off the first prize for best mobile device with their iPhone 4. The judges' comments were: "Great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smart phones."

HTC won the first prize in the category best device manufacturer. The judges' comments were: "This company has built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms. In particular, it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customer service, this is a well-deserved award."

The game Angrybirds won the award in the category best mobile application. The judges thought that this application was "simple, intuitive, incredibly addictive, and perfect for “snacking” consumption. It has underlined the importance of the applications market, and helped raise the credibility of small independent developers outside the mainstream."

Until next time,
