A newbie in the world of Twitter? Read these tips and tricks!

"Do we all have to set up a Twitter account?" was the question during our first lecture. "Yes, you do" was the answer. Lucky me, I already ad an account but a lot of students did not have one. For them and those who want to learn more about Twitter I wrote this blog post about some tips and tricks for newbies in the world of Twitter!

First of all, Twitter is not only for writing about what you are doing..
Some people say: "Oh, so you are just saying all the time what you are doing?" That is not what is Twitter about nowadays. On the contrary, a play-by-play of your day's events is not going to draw people in. You do not have to answer the question "what are you doing?" but you have to answer questions like "what has your attention?" "what are you up to?" and "what are you thinking?"

Hashtags, retweets and private messages.. What?
Did you get the 'Oh my' feeling when you saw all the #s and @s when you signed in for the first time? Use the @ symbol before a Twitter user's name to link to that profile. Use hashtags (# followed by a word) to get your post to show under a particular category. You can also send someone a direct (private) message. If you just started using Twitter, use the @ and the # to get linked to the larger Twitter community.

Link your accounts..
I still hear a lot of people saying: "I already have a Hyves and Facebook account, another account like Twitter takes too much time." Sorry, but this excuse does not make any sense. You can link all your accounts together, so you are still able to eat three meals a day but you are still taking advantage of all the different networks you have.

Until nex time,
